Introducing Shane & Kristy D'Aprile
Friday, November 21, 2025
Katanning locals Shane & Kristy D’Aprile were looking for their next venture after selling their Tyrepower business of twenty years. It was perhaps serendipity that led them to the Hannaford franchise as Derek Batchelor was looking to step out of after two decades.
“By chance I was talking to a friend in real estate who said I should have a look at the Hannaford franchise,” said Kristy. “I banked that thought and that same night Shane said to me ‘You’ll never guess what, I was talking to someone about Batchy’s business today, what do you reckon?’”
Having known Derek for over twenty years as a customer of their previous business, the D’Apriles decided to take a closer look.
“It’s local, a sole operator business and seasonal which gives us the opportunity for some work-life balance - we thought it sounded perfect for us,” said Kristy.
“We don’t want to leave Katanning, we love Katanning and living regionally, so we were happy to find something that fitted Shane’s skillset that meant we could stay in our hometown.”
Since selling their business two years ago, Shane has been working for a local farmer and Kristy has been focussed on her role as Shire President.
Shane and Kristy took over the Hannaford franchise in October and said that they are looking forward to re-establishing their relationship with customers.
“We both really enjoy the people side of business, which we’ve missed over the last two years.”
“We’re excited to be providing a service to local growers that assists them in the operation of their businesses. Call me a romanticist but I love harvest in our community. It’s positive, everyone’s working hard - it’s like the lifeblood of our community. I love that, and we’re looking forward to playing a part in it.”
Amongst the key factors to success in their new undertaking, Kristy lists an understanding of what customers want and how they can fit in with their time frames as crucial.
“Trying to service all of our customers in a timely manner when it’s a big season is the most important thing we can do. And because we know everyone we don’t want to let people down!”
As they settle into the business, Shane and Kristy are committed to maintaining Hannaford’s respected standing in the region.
“Derek has served his customers incredibly well for the last twenty years and we want to continue that,” said Kristy. “Like Derek, Shane has a really high work ethic. He is a bit of a perfectionist, taking a lot of pride in his work.”
While Shane has the recent experience of working on farm plus his mechanical background, she added that they are fortunate to also have Derek work alongside them for the first part of this season.
“Our focus is on getting through the first season for now, running a smooth operation and providing a great service,” said Kristy.
